ALICE LEAHY from Fethard and a committed champion on behalf of people who are homeless was today Monday, April 5th named Tipperary Person of the Year. The award will be formally presented at the Tipperary Annual Dinner on Friday, April 23, 2004 at Moran’s Red Cow Hotel.

“From a rural background Alice has become almost a legend amongst the most excluded of Dublin’s homeless. For over thirty years she has worked in the front line providing medical and social services to the most marginalised since she founded TRUST in the mid seventies. A nurse by profession who has also become a writer, broadcaster and commentator to defend the outsiders – society’s casualties who she works with everyday. In recognition of her outstanding contribution we are delighted to announce Alice Leahy is our 2004 Tipperary Person of the Year”, Jarlath Daly, President of the Tipperary Association Dublin said.

Jarlath Daly also said that this award recognises Alice Leahy for her contribution not only in Dublin but in her native Tipperary where through the education programmes undertaken by TRUST “more people have been given the opportunity to understand what it means to be excluded and forgotten.”

This Press Release was issued by the Tipperary Association on Monday, March 5, 2004 Announcing that Alice Leahy has been selected as Tipperary Person of the Year.
