Two Reports from 1974 and 1976 written by Alice Leahy are presented here to show how little has changed despite the prosperity of the co-called Celtic Tiger years, and are a sharp reminder of how much remains to be done.

  • Report on Broad Medical Services for the Single Homeless Person (1976) Download the 1976 Report as a PDF file.

The 1974 Report which Alice Leahy wrote while working as a Nurse and Deputy Director of Simon Ireland led directly to the setting up of TRUST the following year in November 1975. That Report highlighted the problems created by the lack of co-ordination between Medical Professionals and the voluntary sector – a gap that TRUST has successfully filled over the years but the challenge is growing rather than diminishing.

The 1976 Report was completed in the first full year of TRUST existence and is based on a survey carried out by Alice Leahy with Dr David Magee to assess the state of medical services available to single people who became homeless in Ireland around that time.

“These reports are a painful reminder nothing is changing for the outsider in Irish society. They underline how important our Education and Advocacy work now is. If we are help create change we will have to intensify our efforts to make the community at large aware of our responsibilities to those who cannot fit in,” – ANNE LEAHY, Director and Co-Founder of TRUST
